Amplification, disjuncture and illustration analysis -

There are three ways in which music videos work to promote the song. These are:

1. Amplification - new layers of meaning added to a song
2. Disjuncture - contradiction between lyrics and meaning
3. Illustration - not allways literal

1.

'Time to Pretend' by MGMT uses Amplification as the song is about them partying and getting "stonned" and the music video adds effect to this as it shows a image of what they are seeing when there "high" and shows more then on of each person.

2.

Red hot chili peppers 'Can't Stop' uses disjuncture as the music video has no meaning towards the lyrics as it doesn't follow the songs story. There are guys spining bins and holding plastic bottles and this doesn't match the lyrics context.

3.

In 'Can't stop feeling' by Franz Ferdinand, there is illustration used as the music is about feeling emotional pain where as in the video it shows them hitting thereselfs and feeling physical pain. The video also uses disjuncture as the video doesn't really share the same meaning as the lyrics.
