Amplification, Disjuncture and Illustration

Amplification - Is where a video introduces new meanings that do not relate to the lyrics but add different meanings.
Disjuncture - Contradiction between lyrics and video
Illustration - Not always literta

Illustration
Eminem - When I'm Gone, tells us a story throughout the video. It gives you a sense of what the song is about. In this video we can clearly see a link between the lyrics  and the video. I think the construction of the video was thought out carefully. There is clear narrative, which follows the linear structure with a beggining, middle and end.

Disjuncture
In this video N-Dubz are mostly standing in front of a plane and one of them are on a boat. Watching and listening to the lyrics they mention the word Best Behaviour, which is also the title of the song. This suggest that the video will be about them being on their Best Behaviour, but looking at the video we cannot see the a link between them, except for the first bit where he drops his bag on the floor. Dappy is grinning at the camera, while there is a women swimming behind him in a tank.

Amplification
Amplification is where a video introduces new meanings that do not relate to the lyrics but add different meanings. This happens in many pop videos. Florence and the Machine uses amplification in many of there videos. An example of this is You've Got The Love.

Risk Assesment

Not dropping the camera and placing it carefully
Having someone stand by the camera so people can notice the tripod and not trip over it
Covering the camera from the rain if It rains
Always putting the equipment correctly into their cases.

Pitch where our music video will be shown

On the internet
On music channels like MTV, Kerrang, The box, etc
On i-tunes for purchase

Pitch shots & special effects

We will have plenty of shots of the lead singer walking so shots of her feet and and panning shots following her in different angles.
While she is walking we thought we would have a shot of her and specific words which relate
to the song like kill hand thrill etc.
We would like to use the green screen for some of these effects.
We will have a lot of close ups of the lead singer to show her emotion and determination to catch her lover.

Pitch costume

The costume that our lead singer (Roxy) wil be wearing is Androgynous styled clothing and also there will be a hint of rock
clothing.
This will be relating more to the artist then actual song but we could get our lead singer to wear bright and
attracting colours which will be relating to the song as it is about love/romance.
Our costume will be cleary related to
the song because we are going to use bright colours not d
ark and dull as she is going out looking for love.

Pitch setting

Camden high street
Stables market (lock)
Cyber dog
Camden tube station
Canal

Pitch narrative

Performer walks out the tube station and plugs in her headphones, music will then start playing.
She walks down the street, while walking she sees flashbacks of her following a guy.
At the end of the song it says "dont let go of my hand,at which point we will put the two performers hands together while the camera pans up, as they walk in to cyber dog.

Pitch artist signing

Our artist would be signed to a big label like Sony or BMG.

Pitch concept

"a walk through camden bringing memories of how she met the guy shes meeting whilst listening to her ipod"

Pitch - 14

Our Music Is Electro Pop

in a electro pop video you most likely see a upbeat rhythmic  attitude towards life. Partying/ Love/ Sex - drugs - alcohol /Disco.

In general a electro pop video would have a androgynous style of clothing which in 3 words would say "girl meets boy" this may be boyish skinny jeans with silky boots, a suit over coat with a bow tie a mans casual shirt and possibly a trendy hat,
A  typical editing feature of a electro video is a lot of transitions, fast pace editing, so fast shots to match the fast up beat instrumental, a lot of close ups to show the singers emotion and determination.

typical instruments used in a electro pop video are as follows

  • Drum /Drum machines
  • Tape loops
  • Guitar/ Electric Guitar
  • Sequencer
  • Keyboard
  • Sampler
  • Vocoder
  • Synthesizer
There is also derivative forms which are Electro Techno and Chill wave.

Pitch - 13

We used many different technology's in the production and research of our music video.

  • Blogger - as last year we have used blogger to blog about are planning and research for are music video.
  • Powerpoint - we used this software to create our pitch without it it would of been a lot harder.
  • Internet - we have used the internet to research our specific genre and finding.
  • Vimeo - we also used vimeo to research our genre, we viewed past students work.
  • Final Cut Pro - we used final cut pro to do a mock version of a video we learned how to mark in and out / lip sync / the razor blade tool and a few advanced tools
  • Quark X Press - we are going to use this software to create a digipak for our singers album
  • PhotoShop - we are going to use photoshop to edit and remake the images we will put on the digipak and also the words that will go on the green screen.
  • Live Type - Using this software we will create the words which will go on the digipak and the green screen.

Vladimir Propp (Research)

Vladimir Propp was a Russian and Soviet formalist scholar who analyzed the basic plot components of
Russian folk tales to identify their simplest irreducible narrative elements. His Morphology of the Folk Tale was published in Russian in 1928. Although it represented a breakthrough in both folkloristics and morphology and influenced Claude Lévi-Strauss and Roland Barthes, it was generally unnoticed in the West until it was translated in the 1950s. His character types are used in media education and can be applied to almost any story, be it in literature, theater, film, television series, games, etc.
He also concluded that all the characters could be resolved into 8 broad character types in the 100 tales he analyzed:
  1. The villain - struggles against the hero.
  2. The donor - prepares the hero or gives the hero some magical object.
  3. The (magical) helper - helps the hero in the quest.
  4. The princess or prize - the hero deserves her throughout the story but is unable to marry her because of an unfair evil, usually because of the villain. the hero's journey is often ended when he marries the princess, thereby beating the villain.
  5. her father - gives the task to the hero, identifies the false hero, marries the hero, often sought for during the narrative. Propp noted that functionally, the princess and the father can not be clearly distinguished.
  6. The dispatcher - character who makes the lack known and sends the hero off.
  7. The hero or victim/seeker hero - reacts to the donor, weds the princess.
  8. False hero - takes credit for the hero’s actions or tries to marry the princess.
These roles could sometimes be distributed among various characters, as the hero kills the villain dragon, and the dragon's sisters take on the villainous role of chasing him. Conversely, one character could engage in acts as more than one role, as a father could send his son on the quest and give him a sword, acting as both dispatcher and donor.

Final Song Choice (Planning)

We decided to do La Roux - In For The Kill
We think that we can make a good remake of the music video.

Illustration, Amplification & Disjuncture

Wheezers Teenage Dirtbag video uses illustration as the video does tell the story of the lyrics exactly. Dance is used to express the feelings and mood in the video. It also seems like the video is a clip from a movie even though it is not, the storyline is just very clear.

The pretty reckless 'Make me wanna die' is a good example of Disjuncture since there is little connection between the video and the lyrics. The lyrics are about her never being good enough for a guy and how he makes her want to die. However in the video she is just singing with the band behind her with flecks of fire and then it keeps cutting to her walking down a road taking of her clothes.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=asJXmVv18OQ (Could not embed video)

This Providence's 'Keeping on without you" is a great example of Amplification as the song is about losing someone you love and not being able to go on without them & in the video it shows a guy laying on a mattress scattered with broken belongings and the mattress seem's to be in the middle of a completely recked house, assumingly belonging to him and to his loved one that is no longer there. He also keeps having flash backs of her and in the end is seen holding a picture of her.

Target Audience -

The Target audience for our music video would be:
  • Females

  • Young around 16-25

  • would like Electro pop

  • would be from any ethnicity or background

  • would probably be students or young people with part time jobs

  • they would like going to clubs and concerts and enjoy seeing and hanging with friends

  • would be into reading Kerrang and Rock Sound etc.

  • would dress in androgynous clothing

  • the music would appeal to then as they can relate to it.

  • Mood Board Planning

This is are Mood Board that we made for this specific song, on this mood board we have covered the location which is in the middle - Camden, we have covered the genre which is a love song which is on the right - The love hearts etc, on the left we have the type of clothing she would wear and the make up which is symbolic to her style,

    Vladimir Propp

Vladimir Propp was born on April 17, 1895 in St. Petersburg to a German family. He attended St. Petersburg University (1913–1918) majoring in Russian and German philosophy.[1] Upon graduation he taught Russian and German at a secondary school and then became a college teacher of German.
His Morphology of the Folk Tale was published in Russian in 1928. Although it represented a breakthrough in both folkloristics and morphology and influenced Claude Lévi-Strauss and Roland Barthes, it was generally unnoticed in the West until it was translated in the 1950s. His character types are used in media education and can be applied to almost any story, be it in literature, theatre, film, television series, games, etc.
In 1932, Propp became a member of Leningrad University (formerly St. Petersburg University) faculty. After 1938, he shifted the focus of his research from linguistics to folklore. He chaired the Department of Folklore until it became part of the Department of Russian Literature. Propp remained a faculty member until his death in 1970.

He concluded that all the characters could be resolved into 8 broad character types in the 100 tales he analyzed:
    1. The villain — struggles against the hero.
    2. The donor — prepares the hero or gives the hero some magical object.
    3. The (magical) helper — helps the hero in the quest.
    4. The princess or prize — the hero deserves her throughout the story but is unable to marry her because of an unfair evil, usually because of the villain. the hero's journey is often ended when he marries the princess, thereby beating the villain.
    5. her father — gives the task to the hero, identifies the false hero, marries the hero, often sought for during the narrative. Propp noted that functionally, the princess and the father can not be clearly distinguished.
    6. The dispatcher — character who makes the lack known and sends the hero off.
    7. The hero or victim/seeker hero — reacts to the donor, weds the princess.
    8. False hero — takes credit for the hero’s actions or tries to marry the princess.

Taylor Swift's Love story is a perfect example of this as it is the story of Romeo and Juliet.

    Final song pick

We decided to pick La Roux's In for the kill in the end because we thought it would be a good song to make a video to and we also wanted to have a female lip sync-er.
We decided we will set this all up in Camden. We are starting the video of in front of Camden tube station, our front girl is going to come out the station, put her headphones in and walk off to follow a guy through Camden.
We thought we would end the video with a close up of her holding the guy she has been following arounds hand and then they walk into a store called 'Cyber Dog' which looks more like a club from the outside.

Short List of Potential Songs (Planning)

    • Jay Sean ft Lil Wayne - Down

    Vladimir Propp

Vladimir Propp was born on April 17, 1895 in St. Petersburg to a German family. He attended St. Petersburg University (1913–1918) majoring in Russian and German philosophy.

When researching about Vladimir I found out that this man is responsible for creating the effect that every Book, Film and Song has 8 Broad Character types e.g.
    5. The princesses father — gives the task to the hero, identifies the false hero, marries the hero, often sought for during the narrative.
The reason vladimir came up with this theory is because he done some research by reading 100 or more novels and tales and he found out that they all had similar characters and perhaps the same story line -
    A linear Structure.

    The Hoosiers Cops and Robbers

This Music video has the effect of Vladimir's Theory, you can tell straight away from the title that there are good guys and bad guys. already there is 2 of the 8 points made by Vladimir. Also there is also help in the video from every one dancing when they are about to get caught they cause a distraction by dancing which baffles the police.

    Andrew Goodwin's Theory (Research)

    Andrew Goodwin's Theory (Research)

Andrew Goodwin's Theory identifies a number of key features in music videos.

    • A relationship between the lyrics and the visuals, with the visuals illustrating, amplifying or contradicting the lyrics.
    • A relationship between the music and the visuals.
    • Genre-related style and iconography present.
    • Multiple close-ups of the main artist or vocalist.
    • Voyeurism often plays a major part, especially in relation to females.
    • Intertextual references to other media texts may be present.
He says that music videos are often constructed by the link between the visuals and the song plus the artist. Relationships are built between these in the video, and the close-ups of the artists gives them the representation. Voyeurism is used to increase the video’s attractiveness, particularly to males, whilst intertextuality is often employed in humorous videos.
Many of these features are present in all music videos, depending on the genre of the song and the target audience
